To Andy regarding mess not running,if those 4 files are in a directory called "roms" and your cartrides are in a directory called "ti99_4a" the make sure that the mess.cfg file (in the mess directory)reflects the same names.For example i downloaded the mess from the michael fox site and the mess.cfg file had to be changed as follows
biospath = .;roms
softwarepath =.;ti99_4a
Other changes can be made in this file .
I think v9t9 with the "timrad2"file is better than mess
