Actually, DOS relies on file extensions to identify files. I don't think DOS actually uses any headers of it's own design, even the EXE format was 'borrowed'. (Unlike Windows, where entire books of new file formats were invented. But I digress...) Pretty much all file formats have a header of some kind, both for identification and to contain data *about* the data (for instance, a picture header contains information such as height, width, and color. A TI executable header (such that it is) contains the load address, length of the data, and whether there is another file. ;) )
