Francois - your black screen I've seen only if I change focus away from the Ami99 window while it's starting up.. if it's not the active window, it doesn't draw, and when it finishes the master title page it often doesn't want to draw anything else. It's supposed to pick up when you click on it, but I sometimes lose the message somewhere. Is nothing else running when you get that? :)
Stiletto - strange as it may sound, an ASM core won't help very much, and a GPL interpreter even less. The video rendering routines are the part that need to be redone in assembly. But I bet even they will run fast enough on a fixed-mode screen. ;)
