The new version of MESS is out, and this is what you've all been waiting for -- it works. Yes, with full speech. ;)
The command line format is a bit funky - it works if you put the cartridge ROMs in either order, but crashes the game. ;) Make sure the order is The good: keyboard works. Speech is *clear*, about as good as you can hope for. Compatibility and speed are both high. The bad: there is no Alpha Lock, that I could find - the keyboard is always in lower-case mode. The keyboard is mapped as a TI keyboard (same as Ami99). The ugly: try as I might, I couldn't figure out how to get the display right. On my PC, the default screen squashed into the right side of the display - regardless of the resolution. Setting the display to 8-bit gave me full screen (-depth 8), but wrong colors. This didn't stop me from playing Parsec and Alpiner with speech. ;) The curious: There is no currently listed Windows port. I sent an email to ask why not. A Windows port of Mess will likely remove any need for future work on Ami99 - Mess already works great, and does a lot more. The unknown: I didn't attempt to use disk support.
