It took some time, but I've updated the build of Ami99 online - now I include a version now, DX1.0 for DirectX.
Porting it to DirectX broke everything involving graphics, sound, and input.
The input is fixed, and the graphics are fixed, so keyboard and graphics are up to where the Allegro version was. Sound is not implemented yet.
It now runs in a Window and should work in any bitdepth (except 16 color, because DirectX won't initialize). I'll improve the rendering code as time goes on, but for now it's slow.
The window can be resized to any size you like. But the speed of drawing will depend on your video mode and your video hardware. At home I have a Voodoo 3 board - it runs the same speed at any size, but runs slower at 256 colors than 16 million colors. At work I have a Matrox G200 - it runs slower the bigger the window is. For best speed, though, run at 16-bit or better. Test your card - some will run just as fast in a big window as a small one.
Sound and speech will be re-added next, and once that's working some optimization. I'll add some specific drivers for various bit-depths, which should help speed. I've passed my CPU core to an assembly wiz who will optimize it for me, but that may take a long time to come about.
This isn't a very full release - it's mostly to show what's happening, and give you all a chance to try it. Please let me know if it works or not, and what your system is.
