While we've all been wondering, others have been doing. :) R. Nabet, who did the Macintosh port of V9T9, sent me the source that he modified for speech support on his emulator. It does indeed use the TMS5220 emulator from the MAME project, and it showed me what I was doing wrong (so I'm happy to say they ARE compatible).
I've incorporated the routines into Ami99, and it seems to work, except that no sound is produced. The current build of Allegro's audio streaming routines seem to be broken (verified by separate tests), so until that's fixed or I learn what I'm doing wrong, I thought I'd upload the test program I was using to verify the routines. (see the link below). It's a simple DOS program that loads the speech rom, speaks the sentence I'm sure we've all tried (I.Am.The.Texas Instruments.Home.Computer), then lets you enter addresses to hear other words. (If you enter random numbers, you will get noise. ;) Control-break to end the program).
