The change was necessary due to the huge amount of registration spam that the old board was getting. I was unable to upgrade it for a system to deter the spam, so I installed a new board that has measures to block it.

I've made some small settings to the board here -- 'censored' some of the popular drug terms (you'll see 'smurf' instead ), but more importantly I've disabled the URL tag. I don't know if that will slow down the spam but it will make it less effective at least (though, bots don't care if it's effective).

I have some patches to my own PHPBB, Rich, if you are interested in trying some of them, and I have a couple of other ideas to beat the bots, too. It's hard to beat the humans, but the signup rate here suggests bots are the bigger problem.

Within the last month or so, I cleaned up the spam, and I updated some of the anti-spam controls. However, there are still hundreds of fake registrations every day. Previously, I had gotten bogged down by all of the registrations and fell behind in trying to weed out the real ones. For now, please submit a registration and then email me with with your username and email and I will activate you within a day or two. My email is in the message at the top of all the message board pages.
